Risk of Gangrene In Diabetic Patients

Gangrene is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus, resulting from impaired blood circulation, neuropathy, and increased susceptibility to infection. Diabetic patients, particularly those with poorly controlled blood glucose levels, are at a significantly higher risk of developing foot ulcers and tissue necrosis that can progress to gangrene and ultimately lead to limb amputation if not managed promptly. This poster highlights the major types of gangrene encountered in diabetic patients, including dry, wet, gas, and Fournier’s gangrene, and outlines their characteristic features. It further discusses the primary causes and risk factors, such as peripheral arterial disease, diabetic neuropathy, foot trauma, infections, hypertension, smoking, obesity, and poor glycemic control. Common clinical manifestations include discoloration of the affected tissue, pain, swelling, ulceration, foul-smelling discharge, fever, and tissue necrosis. The poster also presents Wagner’s classification system for diabetic foot ulcers and gangrene, emphasizing the progression of disease severity. Effective management strategies include strict glycemic control, appropriate wound care, infection management, improvement of peripheral circulation, surgical intervention when necessary, lifestyle modification, and regular follow-up. Early detection, patient education, and routine foot care practices are essential in preventing complications, reducing the risk of amputation, and improving the quality of life among diabetic patients.
