Abstract

Hallux valgus, commonly referred to as a bunion, is a prevalent foot deformity characterized by the lateral deviation of the great toe and the formation of a bony prominence at the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The condition is particularly common in the aging population due to progressive degeneration of joints, weakening of tendons and ligaments, reduced collagen production, and long-term mechanical stress on the foot. Hallux valgus can lead to pain, swelling, difficulty in wearing shoes, and impaired toe movement, which ultimately affects mobility and quality of life. Globally, approximately 19–23% of adults are affected, while studies in Pakistan report a prevalence of about 37.5% among adults. The present work highlights the awareness of bunion deformity among the aging population, including its common signs, symptoms, risk factors, and management approaches. Early recognition and preventive strategies such as appropriate footwear, orthotic support, toe alignment devices, and foot exercises play a vital role in reducing symptoms and preventing progression. In more severe cases, clinical assessment and surgical referral may be required. Increasing awareness regarding risk factors and preventive measures is essential to improve foot health, maintain mobility, and enhance the quality of life among older adults.
